Festívalhöll Courses
Wednesday July the 3rd 2024 at 1-6 pm - Virkið at Sandur - Price 695 DKK
Come and learn ancient embroidery technique, which was used in the Viking Age! The technique is really good for embroidering on tablecloths, curtains, pillows or for those who want a different and special way to embroider Faroese national clothes.
The technique is seen on the famous Bayeux tapestry, which has been well hidden and preserved in a chest in the Cathedral in Bayeux for many centuries. The Bayeux tapestry is both a historical and artistic masterpiece. It was likely commissioned by Bishop Odo, William the Conqueror’s half-brother, and made in England in the 1070s. The Tapestry tells the story of William invading and successfully conquering England in the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
Teachers on the course are Freja Lindahl Pedersen and Amalie Jonnasdatter. Freja is self taught in Bayeux embroidery, which she has diligently worked with for many years.
Language is Danish/Scandinavian (English/Finnish if needed) and lasts 5 hours. Limited number of tickets! The course is not intended for children.
The course takes place at "Virkið" at Sandur. The price includes materials: piece of cloth with a pattern from the Bayeux tepestry, frame, needle and thread. We offer something to drink and a little snack.

Learn how to prepare and spin the gorgeous Faroese wool as the vikings did it. The vikings were expert textile makers, and knew how to make exactly the right thread for the right task, be it clothing or sails.
We will be working from cut Faroe wool, and you will learn how to comb and divide the wool into different fiber thicknesses, suitable for different textiles like clothing and sails. You will learn how to spin on a viking age drop spindle, and produce your own yarn. Finally we will discuss how the Faroe wool compares to viking age wool, and get your hands on handspun, handwoven recreations of viking age clothing.
The course is taught by Mette Wikkelsø, who is an experienced spinner, weaver and seamstress, who has made multiple recreations of viking age and bronze age clothing.
